Four models, newly developed from the bottom up, build the Challenger MT 800 series. These are the first tractors on the market that have been developed and built exclusively as track tractors from the very start.

All models are fitted with:
- the exceptional power of the latest Caterpillar engines. The MT 835 and MT 845 are powered by the CAT C12 with a 12 litre displacement; the MT 855 by a CAT C15 with a 14.6 litre displacement and the MT 865 by a CAT C16 with a 15.8 litre displacement – the right engine for each output class. All engines have 6 cylinders and 4-valve technology.
The engines feature electronic control and a hydraulically actuated injection system with high-pressure injection, so that all previous and future emissions standards can be met by adjusting the engine management settings. The engine electronics and the transmission electronics "communicate" with each other through the Challenger "Intellitronics" network.
- the completely new electrohydraulically controlled 16/4 speed transmission from Caterpillar, with a maximum speed of 40 kph and a number of shifting options and automatic controls. The Power Management System allows the driver to choose operation at constant engine speed, constant travel speed or maximum power output. The transmission offers eight gears in the field working range from 6 to 15 kph.
- new electronic control of the Caterpillar hydraulic differential steering. The new controls permit speed-sensitive steering of the MT 800 and feature a park position.
- new Opti-Ride® suspension, exclusively developed for the Challenger. The Opti-Ride® suspension system together with the new Caterpillar belts result in a totally new driving experience that was never before possible for track tractors.
- the completely new closed-circuit load sensing hydraulic system, „Load Independent Flow Division“ System (LIFD). The hydraulic system supplies a pressure of up to 200 bar and 166 l/min. Auxiliary control units provide consumers with a variable oil quantity from 3.7 to 113.5 litres per minute. Four control units are standard specification. Oil quantity, pressure and time controls can be set electronically from the driver's seat with the Tractor Management Centre (TMC)
- a completely new hydraulically controlled drawbar, especially developed for the Challenger MT 800, uses hydraulic cylinders to control its position for better work on slopes and in curves. An optional three-point power lift with a lift capacity of 8800 kg is also controlled with these hydraulic cylinders.
- a completely new cab sets standards in spaciousness, comfort and visibility. The Tractor Management Centre (TMC) monitors and controls tractor functions. The One-TouchTM head land management simplifies work for the driver at the end of a field because different functions, e.g. transmission shifting, control unit functions etc., can be saved and then loaded per pushbutton when lowering as well as raising implements. The Surround-FlowTM ventilation system, the new design of the cab and a new air sprung driver's seat with a 25 degree swing angle make working comfortable.
