Transmission

Built from the ground up solely for use on a track tractor, the transmission features push-button control for all of the 16 forward and 4 reverse gears.

Nine individual clutch packs — seven rotating and two stationary — ensure both reliable power transfer and smooth performance. Each of the 16F/4R gears is engaged when a combination of one range clutch and one speed clutch is engaged. The tractor will not “freewheel” in any gear, and maintains constant speed, so the operator is in control, even on the steepest grades.

Hundreds of times per second, the transmission and the Cat® ACERT® engine are in communication to provide optimum productivity and performance. Before the transmission executes a shift, it senses how much load the engine is experiencing to deliver smoother shifts and longer life for all components.

Eight gears in the popular 4 to 9.3 mph (6.5 to 14.9 kph) operating range provide the responsiveness and productivity your applications need. Closely spaced gear splits, concentrated in the primary working range, were designed with the engine torque rise and operating rpm in mind to deliver the most usable power.

Transport Speed

At 24.6 mph (39.6 km/h), Challenger has a faster transport speed than any other 4WD articulated tractor, so more time can be spent in the field and less on the road.
